Not Knowing Jack

“Not today. Because your grandparents have temporary physical custody of you both. But as soon as I

can make it all official, I want you to live with me.”

“Where would we go to school?”

“Well, it will probably be summertime when you move in, but we can talk about what will happen in

the fall.”

“I like school here,” Brandon said in a tone that would have done Chef Luc-Michel proud.

“Sarah?” Jack said. “What do you think of that?”

She looked up at her brother.

“Tell her why, Dad,” Brandon challenged.

Jack was aware of Tony shifting on the sofa, of the sound of his daughter’s hands as they smoothed

down the wool of her skirt, a soft purring scrape, but he looked at his son, at the boy he’d help to make.

He remembered chubby fingers helping him weed his herb garden, round blue eyes always so focused

on everything Jack did. Turning to find Brandon toddling after him everywhere, standing next to him as he dressed, pretending to comb his hair or tie a tie.

The slip and slide of the silk of Brandon’s first real tie as Jack showed him, kneeling behind him in

the mirror, both of them in sober gray suits as they dressed for Patrice’s grandfather’s funeral. “What’s going to happen, Dad? Will I get to wear a flower too?”

Brandon’s words, the way he’d always looked to his father for answers, cut deep under Jack’s skin.

He’d figure out how to do this. Be the right kind of man in front of Brandon and Tony both.

Jack knelt in front of Sarah’s feet, wishing he could offer her something more. He’d never been more

than a shadow in her life, a stranger who came and went. “What do you know about your mother?”

Sarah’s lips paled as she pressed them together, gray against her already blue-white skin.

Brandon sighed and shouldered Jack aside as he crouched next to her.

“You know how Mom was sick so she was in a hospital?”

Sarah nodded.

“The doctors think she’s better, so she’s not there anymore. She’s living with Grandma and Gramps

now.”

At the first mention of her mother, Sarah fixed dry but frightened eyes on Jack. As Brandon spoke,

she began to tremble, the shaking increasing until she vibrated with the speed of a hummingbird’s wings.

Brandon reached for her, a hand on her shoulder, but Jack held out his arms and she came into them, landed
